Diaries of Francis Trowbridge Sherman, 1863-1865 [manuscript].

The diaries give brief accounts of Sherman's participation in the Chattanooga, Atlanta, Shenandoah Valley, and Appomattox Campaigns; his experiences as a prisoner of war, including his escape attempt and his exchange at Libby Prison in the fall of 1864. Sherman discusses camp life, prison conditions; rumors of the death of General Grant and Confederate desertions; and gives an account of several days spent in Charlottesville during which it is rumored that blacks are plundering the town encouraged by the townspeople. Also included are accounts and the names of prisoners of war whose families he plans to contact.
